Sometimes your period is more of a nuisance than usual. Maybe you have a special occasion coming up or you’re planning a holiday and your period is the last thing you want to deal with. You might think that you can’t change mother nature’s plans so you’re just going to have to deal with the cramps, pain and bloating. Well, think again!

With a little bit of planning and preparation, you can safely delay your period and thoroughly enjoy your next big event.

How to Delay Your Period

If you take the combined contraceptive pill as your main form of birth control, you can delay your period by changing how you take the pill. Most combined birth control pills come with 3 weeks of active medication and one week of placebo pills.

To delay your period, skip the placebo off-week and continue taking the active birth control pills. You may need to open a new pack to do this so be sure to have enough on hand to make up for a change of schedule. As long as you take the pills correctly, delaying your period this way won’t affect how your birth control works.

This method won’t work if you take the progestogen-only pill.

Period Delay with Norethisterone

Women who don’t use the combined contraceptive pill can still delay their periods with norethisterone. Norethisterone contains a synthetic version of the hormone progesterone and can be taken for up to 20 days to delay your period.

To be effective, you need to start taking norethisterone 3 days before the expected start date of your period. Your period will come within a couple of days of stopping norethisterone. It isn’t a form of birth control, so you’ll need to use other methods like condoms.
