Have to i take my Blood Pressure medicine at night time

Recent research has suggested that taking your blood pressure medication before bed can make it more effective than taking it in the morning. Almost 20,000 patients with high blood pressure (hypertension) were monitored for several years and among those who took their medication at bedtime were less likely to experience illness or death relating to high blood pressure.

Why Does the Timing of my Medications Matter?

For most people, your blood pressure follows a daily rhythm with it rising higher during the day and falling at night when you’re asleep. Since blood pressure is higher in the mornings, many people prefer to take their medications as part of their morning routine.

However, as we grow older, it’s not uncommon for blood pressure to remain high throughout the day and the night. Called non-dipping blood pressure, it’s more common in people with hypertension who are over the age of 55. Non-dipping blood pressure puts people at a higher risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disorders, and even death.

If you have high blood pressure and/or non-dipping high blood pressure, it’s important to regulate your condition even when you’re asleep. Taking your medication at bedtime can lower your risk of complications.

High Blood Pressure Checks

High blood pressure is often called ‘the silent killer because most people who have it don’t experience any noticeable symptoms. A diagnosis isn’t usually made until a blood pressure measurement has been done as part of a routine health check. Untreated high blood pressure makes a person more susceptible to serious conditions like heart attack, stroke, and premature death.

Blood pressure is the force your heart uses to pump blood around your body. A person’s average blood pressure range tends to stay constant, but it can fluctuate throughout the day, especially when you’re active or resting.  Everyone is different, but anything over 140/90mmHg is considered high blood pressure, and anything less than 90/60mmHg is considered low blood pressure.
